Do You Have Questions?
Below you’ll find answers to the most frequently asked questions at Waterford CIL. Also, please feel free to check out our Facebook page. If you still can’t find the answer you’re looking for, feel free to contact us.
Independent living is the right of every person, regardless of age or disability, to live in the community, and have the same choice in housing, transportation, education and employment. We are all entitled to participate equally in the social, economic and political life of our community, and live as full citizens with rights and responsibilities.
A Personal Assistant (PA) is someone who helps a person with a disability to do things that they may not be able to do themselves. Personal assistance is the cornerstone of the Independent Living movement. “Personal” means the PA works under instruction or to the agenda of the person with a disability. “Assistance” refers to the method of working; a PA’s role is to assist. They enable the person with a disability to make their own decisions and control their own life.
The person with a disability is termed the “leader” as it is they who direct the personal assistant in their duties, unlike other caring organisations, where they can be told what to do, and have less choice and control. We prefer the term ‘leader’ to client or customer – it’s more meaningful and less clinical.

Personal Assistance
All our personal assistants (PAs) are fully trained and Garda vetted. They arrive at the person’s home at an appointed time to perform a set of agreed tasks, such as getting dressed, having a shower, making the dinner, going to the shops or doing housework. They can make a huge difference to the quality of life for a person with a disability.
Accessible Transport
Waterford CIL operates a fully accessible transport service called Vantastic. Anyone with a disability can avail of our service for a moderate fee – whether it’s to go shopping, to the cinema, to a hospital appointment – whatever you need to live an independent life. We have a number of mini buses in both Dungarvan and Waterford city.
